A Pobice Website

Pobice The Goblin

The main website produced by Pobice started off in 1998, when we wanted a homepage for ourselves. Instead of a homepage we decided on an alternative site. Its now in it third incarnation, which as well as been the longest lasting version its also has become the most successful one. With the site been so large we have broken it down into a few separate sections for this profile.

The main site design now dates back to early 2000, with a slow but steady renewal taking place on most of the basic page, to bring them up to full css and html standard, so that the pages load much more quicker. Most of the pages are done in fairly basic HTML, with a CSS sheet backing them up. The main index page is a typical frame system, and is done in plain HTML accept the advert (which uses ASP to pick a random advert out of a list of possible ones), and the actually menu page, which is now done in shtml so that it loads the standard copyright template up (which all newly redone pages on the site have at the bottom of them).

Rants

The first major section of the site is called Rants. This is a semi-automated forum style script (although with a few easy changes it can be fully automated, its only semi as we currently need control over what gets put on and what doesn’t.) This system consists or a large number of modules, so parts of it can be integrated with other parts of your site. For example the comments section can be integrated to articles you may write. A full list of scripts, which are used in rants, will be coming soon on the price list.

The rants section acts as a kind of forum system, although its current set up (and the thing written on there) seem to discuses what it really is very well. Some of the features we currently have for the rants system include:

  • Automated listing system
  • Semi-automated comments
  • Eemail notices
  • Surveys
  • Classic Rants*

NEW
Over the past couple of months we have been re coding the rants system. Although it is still very much wip there is something to see. If you want to take a look click HERE. Note as its wip some pages haven't been done yet and other pages may suffer from errors.

*This is a system where by you can give older posts a Classic status if they particularly standout. Currently it is set up so that a date is entered for the rant you want to make a classic rant. Once this date has been passed it will show up as a Classic, and if its within the first two weeks it shows upon the front page.

Chat Rooms
#Radliffe
#pobice

There are two chat rooms on the website called #Pobice and #radcliffe. Both sites are pretty similar, although #radcliffe has more content, due to its larger appeal. On the sites are customised MIRC stats pages, a log view script (converts an mirc log into a readable html page) and of course the actual chat room interface.

Epics

The next section of the site that may interest you is the up and coming Epics, although this uses many of the scripts from the rants section, it’s the look of the page that we feel is the best part. The Epics system shows what can be produced using a table system and some very small images, offering a slight difference to the style of the rest of the site. It is still not up and running so it occasionally may show up errors, as this part of the site is no where near live as yet, and has been put on the backburner for a while.

Surveys

If you go to the main page of the site (the menu page) you will notice that there is always a silly survey on the main site page using the survey script. The script itself feature a password protected management system, allowing you to add new questions, and then the code needed to add to the page the survey is required I then automatically generated for you. This code can be placed anywhere, on any site as it always points to the survey result page, which gives you the up to date results once it has updated the results. The survey script also has a feature to work with another section of the site called rants, and produces a slightly different code for the rants section.

A new feature recently added is the ability to alter the results of the survey if need by (very useful when you find out people have been trying to rig the poll). At the same time as this I also introduced a two-stage security system, to preventing people from trying to cheat (although its still possible, its just that it can’t be done quickly anymore. The script is no why infallible, and still allows repeat votes, but the system ensure it will be a while before that can happen (most people have to close down there internet browser and re-log onto the internet before they can vote again).

If a more secure voting system is need, we can produce one using the current system, but requiring people to use a user name and password before they can vote. This way we can store a record of who has voted and prevent them from ever doing so again.

Gearstones Lodge

This is a charity site we currently run for Gearstones Lodge. It uses ASP mainly due to the fact the site runs on modular system, and it need to be an ASP page as the site is non-framed and uses the advert system for rants/epics. Again this site has a different look to the other sites, showing another different style your site could use. The forms on the site will email me with the details of what people have filled in, so we can then forward them onto the relevant person within Gearstones organisation. The site may seem to lack content, but this is due to a number of factors including the fact we run this site for free and the fact that all the information must be typed in and adapted for the website from various different sources (ie we have to write the information to be put on there)

The gearstones lodge site also features a news page. This is run from a cgi script called newspro which we have got fairly used to using now and have configured such a system a couple of times. The benefit of this is that it allows people with almost no computer knowledge to add items to the news page. Even administrating such a system once set up is fairly easy. If needed we will provide basic training on how to use the system.
